New NLM Preprint Pilot Project

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) launched a pilot project in 2020 to test the viability of making preprints reporting COVID-19 research supported by NIH available via PubMed Central (PMC). As of March 2024, all preprints resulting from NIH-funded research are in PMC.

Preprints

A preprint is a version of a scholarly or scientific paper that precedes formal peer review. Due to the rapidly evolving literature about COVID-19, preprints may be a valuable resource.

Figshare COVID-19 Open Research Portal
Figshare offers a curated portal for COVID-19 material including data and preprints.
Google Scholar
Search for published and unpublished materials including preprints related to COVID-19 using Google Scholar. Each result will need to be checked to confirm preprint status. Use the date feature to select a custom date range for results. A sample search query is: [~COVID-19 OR ~"novel coronavirus" OR ~"wuhan virus"].

Publons: COVID-19 Related Publications
Publons: COVID-19 Related Publications contains papers and pre-prints identified as being on the frontier of COVID-19 research. While still under development, this list enables researchers to quickly find, review and screen papers depending on their area of expertise. Users are welcome to submit reviews using guidelines (this is important to ensure COVID-19 researchers can rapidly assess your review) or score a paper today. Click on a paper's title to find links to the full text and to Publons' post-publication review form.

Use the query of: "preprint"[Publication Type] to find records for preprints in PubMed. PubMed records include a link to PubMed Central to view the full text of the preprint. To exclude preprint records from search results, use the Boolean "NOT", e.g., covid 19 NOT preprint[filter]
