NIH Public Access Policy: Submission Method A

Submission Method A

Some publishers automatically submit all NIH-funded final published articles to PMC on behalf of NIH-funded authors, to be made publicly available within 12 months of publication. If author publishes in a Method A journal, they should inform the journal that the work is subject to the NIH Policy.

If authors publish in one of these journals, no further action is required for compliance except to cite the PMCID reference number in future NIH applications, proposals and progress reports.

See Method A Journal list. This list of journals is updated on a regular basis. NIH-funded authors are highly encouraged to check this list each time they are preparing a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Submission Method A Steps

Publication:

  • Confirm journal is a Submission Method A journal

  • Acknowledge grant award/s in manuscript

  • Notify journal the work requires submission to PMC

My Bibliography and Compliance:

  • Add the work to My Bibliography when a record for the work is in PubMed (or add manually if not)

  • “PMC Journal – In Process” will appear automatically

  • PMCID will appear after work is posted to PMC
