NIH Public Access Policy: Citing the PMCID

Citing the PMCID

Anyone submitting an application, proposal, biosketch or report to the NIH must include the PMC reference number (PMCID) when citing applicable papers that they author or that arise from their NIH-funded research.

NOTE: No special notation is required when manually citing publications that do not apply under the Policy.

Where to Find the PMCID?

The PMCID can be found in several resources.

  • My Bibliography: Per NIH Public Access Policy page, the easiest way to find and track PMCIDs is to add the citation to work to your NCBI My Bibliography account. My Bibliography will automatically add the PMID (and the "PMC Journal - In Process" and  NIHMSID).
